I have converted my VMC from an old 611D system to a new 828d system with S120 Combi.

All the PLC logic works fine, drives and spindle all work fine.

When running a G code program, If I execute a T0 , having picked one tool only, all works fine

The problem I face is when running a G code  program and executing the SECOND tool change.

For the first tool change all will be fine.

The tool location will be assigned to DB4300.DBW6 and then I use the PLC logic to execute the tool pickup.

If I compile a simple G code, with just 1 tool pick up and then end it with a T0, all will be fine.

The Old Tool location (DB4300.DBW20) will update itself from the pick location (DB4300.DBW8) and then all the logic in the PLC will be executed fine.

Also the flag bit DB4300.DBX33.6  (1:1 change) remains low

However when I execute a 2nd Tool change without executing a T0, the Old tool Location does not update itself to the tool location of the tool that was in the spindle.

Instead both the New tool (DB4300.DBW8) and Old tool (DB4300.DBW20) take the location number of the incoming New tool just called.

At this instant also the Bit : DB4300.DBX33.6  (1:1 Exchange) changes from Low to High

Everything is indicating that my problem is related to the fact that it automatically tries to implement a 1:1 tool exchange.

My VMC is of the Drum type  and NOT of the tool gripper type, meaning that in my VMC the tool drum moves under the Spindle and then the the spindle comes down to pick the tool.

Had it been a tool gripper type, then it would have been OK to use a 1:1 exchange, but in my case I cannot use a 1:1 tool exchange.

I changed MD22550 $MC_Tool_Change_Mode from 1 to 0, but still nothing worked.

Can anyone help please?

If I manage to switch off the 1:1 tool exchange option, I believe that it should work fine.

But I cannot find anywhere where I can switch off the 1:1 exchange.

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you use the application example MAG_CONF_MPF to set the magazine parameters?

 (from Sinumerik 828D commissioning manual)

For revolver magazines it is advisable to define all locations as fixed-location coded. For magazine type 3 N320 $TC_MAP3[NUM_MAG] = 81 (Bit6 = 1) is set.

; Set up magazine
N290 $TC_MAP1[NUM_MAG]= MAG_TYPE
N300 $TC_MAP2[NUM_MAG]="MAGAZINE"<<NUM_MAG
N310 if MAG_TYPE == 3
N320 $TC_MAP3[NUM_MAG]=81 ; Magazine status, all locations
                            fixed-location coded for revolver
                            magazine

This setting should return the old tool to its original location.

Many many thanks for your input, as you guided me in which direction I have to go.

I was looking for MD parameters.

I am still new to the sinumerik systems and still learning as I go along.

Can you kindly inform me in which folder do I have to save the MAG_CONF_MPF mpf file please?

Do I have to link the file to an MD parameter?

I will go through the 828D commissioning manual but if you can guide me where to save the MAG_CONF_MPF it will be greatly appreciated.

The info I quoted is from the 828D tool management manual that you can get from here: https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/109823585

The program file is supplied on the Toolbox CD for the 828D.

This program is just an example of an easy way to set the various tool management parameters at configuration time.  You could also just manually set the various parameters by hand.  You must have set most of these to be able to do any tool changes at all.

I am still relatively new to the Sinumerik platform, though I have learned alot in the past weeks.

I am missing some knowledge in the Programming code that has to go into the MAG_CONF_MPF file, but I am learning it from the Tool Management manual.

The only missing piece of information I have is where to save the MAG_CONF_MPF file.

Should it go on the same location where the ASUP file is saved?

If not, can you kindly share with me the location where I have to save the MAG_CONF_MPF file?

It doesn't matter where the file is stored.  It could be in the main program folder, a workpiece folder, or the local folder.

You just need to select the program and execute it (cycle start) in auto mode one time to make the parameter assignments.  Then it can be deleted.
