Hello everyone I want to make remote connection between s7-1200 and wincc prof. I found out S7-based Telecontrol via DNP3 Protocol application example. But I confused little bit, because why do I need this protocol ? I mean, even if my confugiration either via internet/vpn or via Lan network, plc and scada will be in same network and I will able to connect them with S7 connection. If I decide to use DNP3, I have to purchase extra Wincc Telecontrol licence and CP1243-1.So I confused.Do I have to use this protocol or just s7 connection enough ? What is the pros and cons ? Best regards. |

Hello 21321; DNP3 is considered a substation protocol, used in power distribution systems, in the same way that IEC 61850. DNP3 was developped and is mostly used in North America, IEC 61850 is mostly used in Europe. Both protocols are implemented when you want to connect the master station to Remote Terminal Units in the field, in the power distribution grid; these RTUs collect data and error messages from the substation at a very high rate, and the master must be made aware of any problem as fast as possible,, so DNP3 provides various specialized communication services that prioritize the transfer of critical data. You can have a look at the basic information on DNP3 from this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNP3 So it does not seem a protocol that would serve your application. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |
