My parameters are passed to the script as you described. But they are being passed ByVal not ByRef.

My script, stripped down to the bare minimum:

Sub Script_Increment(sTag )

sTag =10
intTag2 =10

where
intTag1 and intTag2are my internal tags (external to the subroutine)

I pass the tag intTag1 as a parameter (sTag) to the subroutine in the Click event of a Button.

intTag2 will be changed, but intTag1 is not.

I've now done a search of this forum (yes, I should have done that first). And I see that there is a post answering my question, in great detail:

In brief: no, you can't pass a parameter ByRef. But a work around is suggested in the post (use a function to return the value instead).

Finally, I found a way to use ByRef in Sub Procedures.

Try to give the Sub the WinCC Variable as an Array of something.
Inside the Sub, choose the array element index and fill the value into that index.
Directly the variable gets its new value before the Sub Procedure finished its call.


Sub test (ByRef test)
Dim cnt
For cnt = 0 To 10
test(0) = test(0) + 1
Next
End Sub


Example:
myVariable_1 : Array[0..10] of Int

Then use a HMI screen and put an EA field on that screen. Connect the EA field to the root array element of the variable.

Example:
myVariable_1[0]

Add a Button to the screen where you can fire up that script.

Use a WinCC internal variable as an Array(!!!) of Int (for example) and put it inside the parameters of the test function.

Example:
test SmartTags("myVariable_1")

As you push the button you will see the value inside the EA field on the screen counting up from 0 to 10 (!!!!) :)

So... it looks like SIEMENS need to do something here...
ByRef is definetly wrong implemented. It would be very nice if ByRef could be used as normal here and not only with arrays.

I know this is an very old question, but for people looking for an correct answer, the answer is yes: byref will pass an variable as an object and you have to use .value to copy a value to it.

For example:

sub function(byref var)

var.value = 10

end sub
