How to select rotary encoder

PISCEAN 2010 Posts: 8092 Rating: (884)	Hello Experts, I have to meet following application & accuracy requirement. Rotor shaft weight of 25 Ton is rotated at about 1 RPM. I have to measuere & display the degree of the rotor shaft. Job application accuracy requirement about the rotor indexing position is it should measure & display at an accuracy of 1 sec. i.e. e.g. display should be indicate 10 deg 10 minute 1 sec. In case of power failuer the degree must be memorised & after resuming the power resumeed, the same previous one to be displayed.Can I select absolute encoder & for this much accuracy how much PPR encoder I need to select? Your tips/hints/comments are highly appreciated. Thanks, DEEP.

I think there is no such encoders with this PPR. So the best way is to install encoder to the measuring shaft, which is installed after a gear box. As I know encoder may have up to 65536 PPR (may be there are encoders with higher PPR), so you will need 1296000/65536=19,77 gear ratio. And you will need multi-turn absolute encoder.

Hello KSN, Suppose if I have to measure 1 degree precisiosly, do I need to go for 360 PPR encoder? I want to learn how encoder is to be selected for precision measurement? I really appreciate your help/tips/information on this topic. Thanks in advance. DEEP.
