S7-1200 SMs all show ? for diag status ????

0_Einstein Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 12/23/2025 Posts: 16325 Rating: (2520)	First time I have had a S7-1200 report all Signal Modules with ? for diagnostics status. At the modules, they all power up and appear normal with Green power and no fault LEDs. Because of the ?'s, the PLC shows a blinking Fault LED, and no MAINT LED. This is also my first StartDrive / Portal application. It has 3 drives with telegram 352 (as an FYI). Drives are communicating and give green checkboxes for diag status and no BF fault on the G120 CUs so telegrams are working - plus data is showing up fine in the data from the drive. I do not know where to turn for this as nothing in the portal system is giving me a hint at what is wrong. I've power cycled the system multiple times during the evolution of the system startup, and nothing seems to have cleared the problem. If someone can suggest a quick solution, great. Otherwise, I'll submit a support request.

It sounds as if you have a break in the communications backbone. Swap the modules arouns and see if there is any difference. Ihave had problems like this with other systems that was an out of box hardware issue. GOOD LUCK. w

For now, I'll remove all SMs and see if the diagnostics for the PLC at least come back and go from there. Most to follow. Thanks Wizard and W.B. This is a new one for me.

PLC diagnostics still works, and the display is identical to the situation where the SMs were connected - all ?'s. Powered down PLC. Swapped the first two 16DI/16DO modules. Now I have : PLC <- SM2 <- SM1 <- rest of SM's Now I slide SM1 out of SM2: PLC <- SM2 \| SM1 <- SM's Powered up PLC. Go online and the diagnostics for SM2 shows "unknown" for part # and other diagnostic details. Now I am borrowing a new-in-box S7-1215 from a co-worker. Visual inspection of the connector for PLC results show it looks normal. Hopefully the replacement PLC fixes the problem.

A co-worker suggested create the project hardware config from scratch and see if it's just portal being stupid. Sigh. Created a hardware configuration and downloaded. All green checkboxes. Copied over everything from original plc to new plc inside the same portal project. Compiled, fixed any issues with system hardware IDs and constants, and now when I go online, I see the true status of all the hardware. Wow. Works. :)

Thanks for the share. w Now that I know the answer, this is the first portal project at this facility. It started up on V10.5 SP1, with production starting up right after SP2, so the project began with V10.5 SP1->SP2. A while later, migrated to V11 ... SP1 ... SP2 ... and in between, made it V12, and finally V13. Word to the wise, if you are upgrading old projects to newer portal versions, at some point, you will either need or have to do this to make things work right. I do have one nuisance green check box that does not match the DIAG LED on a TC module. The module reported loss of module power. Possible, but doubtful. I'll move a couple TC modules around to see if the problem stays with the slot or with the hardware. Only wasted a day or two on this...
