I have a variable with multiple references throughout the program, and I'd like to replace all instances of this marker with a DB variable using a script. Does anyone have experience with creating a TIA Portal API script to achieve this? I've searched online but couldn't find a suitable solution. Any guidance or examples would be greatly appreciated. I have 2 k markers to change in the projects maybe someone(familiar with openess) is intereseted to supporting me in writing this script Specifically, I'm looking for a script that can: Identify all instances of a specific marker in the project Replace each instance with a corresponding DB variable. If you have any suggestions or solutions, please share them with me. I'd be grateful for any help in solving this problem.

Member Joined: 6/20/2017 Last visit: 8/31/2025 Posts: 486 Rating: (41)	The only automation I can think of would be to export the blocks to text sources (if possible) and do the conversion with a text editor, and then re-import the blocks and rebuild the project. But I don't know the size of your project makes sense for them. Maybe a search and replace text directly in the project might be faster.

Portal will fix it for you if you just let it. Let's say you have a tag named StartPB and you want to move it to a DB, let's call that DB "Tags". Here's how I might go about it. All this needs to be done offline: In the PLC tag table, find StartPB and rename it to Tags.StartPB - before creating a StartPB tag inside the Tags DB In your DB, temporarily rename it Tags_ so you can cheat a bit In the PLC tag table, rename Tags.StartPB to "Tags".StartPB Verify one place in the logic where this tag appears and make sure it is valid and not red squiggly lines below it. Delete the tag from the PLC tag table Add StartPB to DB named "Tags_" Rename "Tags_" DB to "Tags" Check your plc logic to verify all the tags for StartPB have been changed to "Tags".StartPB Once you know this works, you can copy the PLC tag table tags you want moved to the DB and paste directly into the DB. You can reorganize them as you like once they are there. There are tricks you can perform to help with the above, but the trick is to first group all the tags being moved to the DB, export those grouped tags to excel or notepad, Then rename the "PLC Tag Table" tags externally, and then paste the renamed tag names right over top of the existing tag names - making sure they will be valid. If they become invalid, Ctrl-Z to undo the paste, correct the external list of tag names and try again. The quotation marks around a symbol name indicate in the program that the tag is of global scope. The pound sign (#) indicates a tag is of a local scope. Sub structure names are ignored for the moment. The problem case is where tag names do not conform with the prescribed format. Then the tag name is encapsulated with quotation marks. An example would be #"A name with spaces" which is a local tag that was created in the block parameters as A name with spaces. The tag names filled out in the declaration table does not contain quotation marks. The quotation marks are only added by the software, when required in the program code view.
