Recently somethign has changed to cause the following problem: 

Third party DOS based Post processor will write the program to the Part Programs Folder on HMI. 

Example: "5473.MPF" can be seen listed in the Part Programs Folder.

Older programs that have been loaded into NC previously can be selected & run OK.

When we attempt to select the new program from AUTO mode:

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Softkey / Highlight Program "5473.mpf" / SELECT softkey

 to run in NC we get message in log:

"\MPF\5473.MPF Data Type in target directory not allowed or is Edit"

"job terminated with error"

The program is not open in the editor.

There is no problem with the program itself as we can run it using "Execute from HD" option but this means no program block view or other useful functions.

What does the data type error mean?

Problem is the same when in Manufacturing level with password set to "SUNRISE"

NCU free memory is 1,379,572.

Hard disk memory 5,574,895,616

Program size is not the issue in this case? If the file name was incorrect, the same program also would not have run from HD.

How this program is created/generated? By any external software i.e. dwg to text conversion?  Please delete the present program from NC memory/HDD & transfer fresh/new program, while transfer, please confirm the successful transfer of data.

 Program is created by a DOS based postprocessor called FARMDESIGN (structural steel software)

The system only produces programs with a number for a name and has never been a problem before. 

I have tried it with various different programs and none will load. 

Can I view the "Part Program" memory locations in windows to check if there is an issue with permissions etc?   I cannot see anything in mpf.dir

 Please try to rename the program , or transfer them out to change their names 

"According for Siemens 840D Programming Guide " Program Name should NOT be starting with number --I always told my customer you should name your program such as ABC123, NOT like 1234567. if you use number starting name, it Not must have issue right the way, but it will be very possible have problem in the future. " ---there are a lot of similar case in Siemens 802D  and some of in 840D.

 Machine has always run with number only for program name as the DOS based post processor does not facilitate renaming and just assigns the next number in sequence.

Is the "function keys" showed grayed or normal in MDA?

Have you tried to create a small program in MDA that you save with letter in beginning?

And after you select and try to run it in Auto.

Does this machine have more than one channel?
