I'm trying to learn more about the difference between GSD and GSDML files.

In the old days, only GSD (Generic Station Description) files existed. They are needed mostly for Profibus devices and they contained descriptions of device parameters, configuration and other stuff, usually needed for communication.

Later GSDML (GSD Markup Language) appeared and mostly for Profinet. Since they also contain necessary data for communication, I wonder in what other ways are they different from GSD? Does it have something with TIA also?

I know this is general theoretical question, but I hope someone would be able to provide more clarification.
