Hi 

I recently started learning how to program in TIA Portal V16, and I was wondering if is there any way to monitor packets that are used to communicate by PLC? Some package sniffers or Wireshark. I want to be able to watch it while using simulation. I don't own any hardware and wish to simulate everything on my PC. Is there any way to do that?, sorry if my question is trivial I am new to this. If not what are my options.

I don't think you would be able to monitor traffic when using plcsim because of the way the simulated communication is made, but I have not tested this.

The way you would monitor traffic is by using a switch that can mirror a port and is described in a FAQ here:

I wuold also say PLC Sim is difficult because it uses an internal softwarebus for communication. Wireshark only logs on the network.

If you have an old Hub (not switch) you can also use this for "mirroring" the netork traffic

One option is, to replace the xyz.dll from Siemens which handles all the communication to network adapters and/or Plcsim with your own variant. Your own variant logs all the data which goes in and out and also passes the data to the original xyz.dll.

When you store the data in a pcap format, then you can write a Wireshark dissector for your logfile format which parses your own information and the fdl-header, and for the fdl payload you can call the already existing dissectors in Wireshark for s7comm and s7comm-plus.

I've done this in that way, but this was before Siemens was checking for signed libraries.
