Array of char to string

In Advanced it was simple - in HMI I set Array of char and on screen it was I/O field with text. But Unified does not know this datatype. So I thought I use Array of Byte and in script it will be converted to text... BUT then each character is 1 PowerTag so It can not be used. Does It mean - when I need to use 1char variable it must be string (3B instead 1B) in PLC? Do you know about some other way how to work with this text datatype?
