You mention accessing non-optimized DB data without arrays or UDTs.  Is this really what you want?

You can use PEEK/POKE to read / write S7-1x00 DB data indirectly.  For S7-1500 (and for extremely advanced s7-1200) projects, you can use a "pointer" that allows accessing non-optimized DB data with just a bunch of numbers used to create an "ANY" type pointer which can then be passed around.

What real-world problem are you trying to solve that you would need to go against the Siemens programming and style guidelines (which suggest re-architecting a design in order to avoid using indirect addressing)?

I'm encountering the same dilemma when using TIA Portal v17, it feels like it should be possible to access non-optimized DB's in a more "comfortable" way than through arrays, even using UDTs.

Have any of you discovered alternative approaches to tackle this issue?
