Connecting devices at different locations

aamirawan91 Regular Member Joined: 3/6/2022 Last visit: 7/2/2025 Posts: 119 Rating: (3)	I have little to no knowledge of computer networks, and I am working on a project to connect eight different weight transmitters to an S7-1200 PLC via Profinet to gather real-time data from them. This would have been very simple for me if all these devices were directly connected via a switch. I would obviously assign the IP addresses so that they would be on the same subnet. However, most of these transmitters would be located in different areas in the plant away from the PLC. In our plant, we have Ethernet ports at multiple locations to connect to the internet. I have been asked to connect each transmitter to the nearest port and make them communicate. I don't know if those ports would be in the same subnet or not. But suppose if they are not, how would I make them talk to the PLC? I guess routing is used to connect devices in different networks, but how would I do that in the TIA Portal?

This means that devices are addressed by their MAC address and not by their IP address. As a result, PROFINET cannot be routed because routing is done with the IP address. Therefore, the devices must all be on the same subnet. Depending on the hardware used, it may be an option to separate the ports required for PROFINET by VLAN, so that the previously used subnet can continue to function while the PROFINET devices use a separate VLAN subnet. I would say at the moment it is not a question of how to configure this in TIA Portal, it is first of all a question of how to connect to the same subnet. Kind regards Stefan
