They can be exported, but the question is can they be imported as the structure of the exported XML changes between versions of TIA. For some reason. I tried moving blocks from TIA 18 to TIA15_1 and the generated XML's are too different for importing them (at least that's what seems to be the issue).

But the weirder part is that copy-pasting ladder diagrams is not supported. Why? Is the difference between how it works so large between TIA versions? Also, why is generating source files from ladder blocks not supported? If I can generate an XML, why not a source file?

I just keep hitting barriers with TIA, it's not a very convenient software.

Openness can be used to generate XML export files which can be reimported in another TIA version. You will have to research the "how" if you want to know more.

I'm wondering why it is not possible to copy-paste simple ladder networks from TIA 18 to TIA 15_1 (or between any other TIA versions) so I can avoid trying to use Openness altogether.

I've come across a lot of different tasks our company requires (like making two versions of the same program in two different versions of TIA portal) and having the ability to just copy-paste ladder diagrams between TIA versions would have made such tasks much easier. I just don't see why TIA doesn't allow that.

Well, at least going to a higher TIA version is easier. Guess I'll just have to keep in mind to always work first in a lower version of TIA (if I ever get such a similar task again).

Are you asking about software that Siemens stopped updating anything other than security or bug fixes long ago?  Or are you simply venting about the Kindergarten version of Openness (v15.1) compared to the middle school version of Openness available in V18/V19?
