 What you want to do is not possible ^**. Siemens does not make it possible to use the Ethernet link to communicate with the Modbus RTU protocol.

It is not a solution to use Modbus TCP over the Ethernet link. Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU is not the same.

The most economic solution for the S7-1200 is to use a CB1241 (signal board). This clots into the CPU like "hat" would on IOT solutions.

** .. Mr. Duris made a truthful statement. It is possible to abandon the standard Modbus RTU instructions and write your own Modbus RTU code that can be transmitted over Ethernet. The amount of hours needed to do this task, makes it expensive and impractical.
