I had the same problem, it seems that after the Office 365 the xlsx export in queries stopped working, only the xls export was working. When you choose xlsx export just do nothing.

The problem seems to be that for this query xlsx export it needs the ODBC Driver for Excel 32 bits. 

So you need to install accessdatabaseengine 32 bits to be able to export the xlsx query. You are still able to export the xls but if you would like to reimport a query you need to use the xlsx.

Since I'm working with an Excel 64 bits when I tried to install it running the accessdatabaseengine installation file I got an warning saying that my current version is 64 bits and the installation is aborted.

What I did was to run the installation through command prompt using Silent mode, after that xlsx export in queries started working normally.

Just run the command below in the command prompt in the file installation location directory to install in silent mode:

 accessdatabaseengine.exe /s

We are having issues with this every week. Presently the update from Microsoft works fine, but sometimes the same update can cause the problem mentioned to happen and you have to wait for the next MS Office update to solve the issue again. Our developpers are tired of this and it was proposed to replace the interface from MS by one they would have to build themselves....the thing is: taht is a bigger thing to do and it has not been started yet.

By the way, presently, in November 2024, the solution works fine, as described.Here is the more detailed version:

Uninstall all versions of MS Access Database Engine 2016 and then reinstall them.

Download the Microsoft Access Database Engine installation file from the Microsoft website:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=54920

Reinstall the Microsoft Access Database Engine in silent mode "/quiet" using the Windows command line.

• To do this, enter “Command Prompt” or “CMD” for short in the Windows search.

• Use the "change directory" (cd) command to change to the directory in which you stored the file.

Example: C:\Users\Name>cd C:\Users\Name\Downloads

• Run the installation in silent mode using the “/quiet” command.

Example: C:\Users\Name\Downloads>accessdatabaseengine.exe /quiet

If not all of Office has been reinstalled: Run an Office Repair. The quickest way to do it is like this:

a) Windows key + R (on the keyboard). A window comes.

b) Type “appwiz.cpl”.

c) Right-click on the Office package: select “change”.

d) Select Quick reset to reset local registry keys or (if that is not enough and authorization is there) online repair to retrieve current fixes
