How to open a PNG file or PDF file in Runtime in Unified Panel

John1209 Joined: 11/14/2024 Last visit: 8/28/2025 Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	Hello All, I was trying to Open a PDF file in runtime in Unified panel. Previously, I was able to do this in a Comfort Panel. I had to Install PDF printer in the panel, and Configure a PDF viewer in a Screen. This way I was able to access all the created PDF file in the stick and open which ever I wanted. Whereas in unified panel, I understand there is no direct way to save a PDF file of the screen. I have configured buttons to create screen shot with time stamps. And am able to access these images in PNG format using Apps>Browse Files. But I am not able to Access these images in Runtime or Open them in the browse files. By default when trying to open the images, it opens with Firefox ESR, which results in Page Blocked. Not able to view. When I tried with Libre Office 7.0, it shows file is corrupted and attempts to repair and ends up showing not able to open as file is corrupted. My other idea was to convert the PNG file to PDF using Ip command by configuring CUPs Virtual printer in Start program. But I am still working on that angle. So is there any way I can open the PDF file in a Unified Comfort panel without stopping runtime like in a comfort panel?? Also is it possible to open and view PNG files in the HMI directly?? Any ideas and suggestions are most welcome. With regards John

Also I understand by using Doc Viewer I can convert .ODT files to PDF. But I want to convert PNG files to PDF files, which I believe can be done by using a printer. I was testing this, But could not understand where the printer will be saving the converted files. Can someone tell me about this?? I have attached the screenshot of the virtual pdf printer I have configured in the Panel. I have set it as server default. I am trying to convert a specific file to a PDF now. But could not figure out if its working or not. As you can see this is how I am trying to convert a PNG file "/media/simatic/X61/05-01-2012_003155.PNG" to PDF. When you say that printing PNG as PDF does not work, can you give some more details? Can you see any information using TraceViewer? Kind regards Stefan

I am trying to use Trace viewer. Hopefully I ll get some info from there. As I have mentioned earlier, I am not sure if the configuration of the printer is right. And I am also not sure if the JS is sending the file to the printer, as the job details in the printer does not have the file I want. At this point of time I am still figuring out how to access the Trace Viewer. Once I am able to set that up, May be I ll be able to give you some more detailed information. Edited: I enabled Trace Logger and Trace forward. A trace logger file with 722 pages was created. I tried printing one page, and the page was converted as PDF and was saved in /home/industrial. So which means the printer config is working and is able to convert files to PDF. Now I need to figure out a way to send the PNG file to printer. Any suggestions on this angle? regards John

However, it may be a configuration issue. When configuring the PDF printer, you should select 'Generic CUPS PDF Printer' as the driver, not 'HP Color Lase Jet'. Kind regards Stefan

This is working when I give print option from the panel, Browse files> right click mouse on the PNG file, open with print preview> Print. Then there is a PDF file generated in the home/industrial/PDF. But when pressing the button in the HMI, with event configured, Startprogram, it is not creating a PDF file for me. I think, the JS is not calling the function to sent the document to the printer. Can you share me a script you have done, so that I can check with it at once. Regards John

When I manually do it, that is accessing through File Browser>Test.PNG (Right Click)>Open in Print Preview> Print, I get a PDF file in home/Industrial/PDF. The file path for the PNG is correct and the printer config is working fine. I am not sure what else is wrong in the JS.
