kee Posts: 93 Rating: (4)	Hi, Can i use OSM to perform direct link with DIGSI via Fibre Opticl under switch operating mode. From the Manual of SIPROTEC 4 - Ethernet Module EN100 IEC61850 (C53000-G1140-C167-6), it only said that "Direct link with DIGSI only possible in RSTP mode. OSM is a proprietary mode, which only works when combined wih Siemens OSM switches." If I have only 2xOSM and number of SIPROTEC devices,using EN100IEC61850 FO interface card,connected in a redundanct (FO) ring configuration, will there be any problem for me to perform the direct link with DIGSI from remote stations via OSM? kee

Late Platinum Member Joined: 1/7/2006 Last visit: 5/11/2025 Posts: 2705 Rating: (321)	Hi Kee, The OSM are 100% ethernet compatible and have a extra mode as RM {Redundancy Manager}, they are also capable to use withSpanning Tree Protocol but are only lisseners in that protocol. [;)] I dond't know the norm that you give, if it is for higher protection for use in the neighberhood ofHigh Voltages then I' am afraid that they are not usable for it. [:blush:]

kee Posts: 93 Rating: (4)	HiHi Late, Here is my norm: "As far as i know, there are few ways to extract the SIPROTEC device parameter to see the online status of the device using DIGSI proogram. Can via null modem cable, Cross-over LAN cable, or Fibre Optical. But it has mentioned on the "SIPROTEC EN100 IEC61850" manual that, for FO, DIGSI is only poosible to communicate in RSTP mode. Since OSM is the "proprietary mode", which only works when combined with SIemens OSM switches. " So, using Direct-link with DIGSI via OSM (RM Setting) shouldn't be any issue because OSM is also fully compactible to RSTP. Am I right? What do you mean by saying OSM is only a listener in RSTP protocol? What will be the restriction and limitation to be only a listener? The only concern you would see is that OSM equipment is not suitable to place near to high voltage swtchgear due to EMI issue? kee

If you think about this I can tell you that the Rapid Spanning Tree algorithm is not supported by the OSM. The only SIMATIC NET Networking device planned to support this is the SCALANCE X400. My main concern is by using OSM, whether it's possible to get the communication between DIGSI program in PC and SIPROTEC device in another end. Attached a ring sturcture that i've plan to work on. kee Attachment Can DIGSI runs on the Notebook via the above connection with.pdf (1304 Downloads)

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Hello, the question I ask myself is, do you use the DIGSI Program or do you use the additional optical Interface. If you use only the Program, what I think is possible, than you can connect to the OSM, no doubt. I do not know if the Ring structure of the used SIPROTEC devices does work, this you should check with the guys of the PTD Customer Support. [;)] If you use the FO Interface Iguess it will not work, because if you check the document you added you see that the FO converter only works with the RSTP onthe optical interface.Due to the fact that the OSM does not support this I guess this could be a bit of a problem. Hi Kee, Reaction to Spanning Tree Frames [:P] When an OSM/ESM is interfaced to a higher- level office network, users often require this interface to be implemented redundantly. The company network,however, uses third-party components that do not support fast OSM/ESM redundancy mechanisms (forming rings and standby links). At other points in the office network, a mesh topology is used and the resulting loops are eliminated by the spanning tree protocol (IEEE 802.1D). As of firmware version 2.3.5, OSMs/ESMs are capable of evaluating spanning tree frames that report modified configurations in the office network. This allows an OSM/ESM ring to interface redundantly with an office network based on spanning tree. During configuration changes (triggered by topology change events) made in a connected spanning tree office network, an OSM/ESM reduces its aging time. As a result, the MAC addresses of all stations (for example PCs) from which no further frames are received during this shortened time are removed from the address table. Stations that use new or modified network paths following a change in the configuration can therefore be reached again more quickly. On completion of theconfiguration changes, the OSM/ESM changes back to normal operation. So with saying it is a lissener I mean that the OSM could lissen to a higher Switch (like the X4xx) and understand the spanning tree protocol. [;)] Note The OSM/ESM passes on all spanning tree frames regardless of the function described above. The OSM/ESM itself does not send any spanning tree frames. The times involved in configuration changes depend on the spanning tree configuration and the network topology. The actual time required to change the configuration must be determined based on tests. During modification of a configuration, "Configuration BPDUs" (configuration frames) with the "TC" Flag ("topology change" bit) set are sent repeatedly in a connected spanning tree network . Based on these frames, an OSM/ESM recognizes the duration of the changes to the configuration. Spanning tree is defined in the IEEE 802.1D-1998 standard and rapid spanning tree in the IEEE 802.1w-2001 standard. [8)]
