User Defined M Codes in Sinumerik 840D

I am looking for some help with trying to define two M codes (one to energize an output, the other one to cancel it) which I am planning on using in certain places of the part program. The idea is to install air blowoff knives inside our machine and I need to be able to control a 24 VDC air valve via the part program. From the forum threads that I read so far it seems that I am really close to finding the answer I am looking for. In short, we have inserted a SR module inside FC121 (for Channel 1) and have the correct DB21 bits going to set and reset the module.The two M codes are also listed under DB81. When the setting bit is manually toggled in Step 7, we can measure 24 VDC at the appropriate terminal. However, when the setting M code is called in a part program, nothing happens. From what I gathered so far, these M codes have to be defined under Machine Data on the NC side of the controller but this is where I got stuck. I apologize for my non-technical vocabulary above, it is just that I have mechanical rather than electrical background and have very limited knowledge of Siemens Sinumerik systems. Stef4o Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	Hello and thank you for responding. We are trying to use M40 to activate the function and M41 to cancel it. I am also attaching a snapshot of FC121 (for Channel 1) showing Network 43 that we have added to handle these two M codes. M40 and M41 were chosen arbitrarily as there were available to use. I recall coming across this manual several days ago but now I can't find it to save my life. I want to pick two M codes that are not in use in the base 840D control. Best regards, Stefan

I followed the instructions and based on the bit identification in Chapter 2 of the manual that Ekalavya referenced above, I chose M78 (DB21.DBX203.6 for Channel 1) as my activating signal and M79 (DB21.DBX203.7 for Channel 1) as my cancelling signal. Then we tied them into a SR block in FC121 (for Channel 1) and chose an availableoutput to control our solenoid valve. Once again, thank you very much! Best regards, Stefan Kratounov
