dmertens Silver Member Joined: 10/3/2007 Last visit: 10/29/2025 Posts: 188 Rating: (34)	Fail safe modules are designed and tested by external certification organisations to fail in a safe predictable way, even if the modules have more than one fault.This does not mean that the modules are magically never failing but that if they fail the outputs are generally guaranteed to go to zero even if there is one internal short circuit and the inputs will identify the signal as being invalid and will return a safe value to to PLC (usually 0, but for analogue cards specific values can be determined in the hardware configuration). The chance of non safe failure for input modules or the chance of failure on demand is less than a number defined in the relevant norm to obain a certain Safety integrety level (SIL). This is the short version, if you want to know more you should follow a course on fail safe.
