I want to know your opinionforthe following question: is it possible to use IM 308-C module as a PROFIBUS slave in EG 183U expansion unit with DI and DO modules(as PROFIBUS masterfor this slave we are going to use IM 308-C module in the ZG 135U central rack S5-135U with 928B CPU) ? Is this configuration (master IM308-C in ZG 135U <----> slave IM308C in EG 183U) liveable in principle? Any help will be appreciated . Best regards, Alexander.

Simaticus Posts: 262 Rating: (24)	Hi aag_03, an IM308C can't live alone in a S5 system. The IM is not capable to access the backbone of an extension unit like EG183 or a central unit. Hence you 'll need a central unit including a cpu to access the IM. Good luck

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 1/23/2026 Posts: 3054 Rating: (1062)	Hello aag_03 while the IM308C can function as a DP Slave, it can only do so in a central rack in combination with an S5 CPU (i.e.it makesthat PLC function as an intelligent DP Slave). As such you can NOTuse an IM308C to convert an S5 expansion rack into a "pure" DP Slave I/O station. If you are not afraid to lookoutside the Siemens world, you can though use a IM306 DP Slave modulewhich willallow to do what you plan on doing. I hope this helps

Now it is clear for me, that I can't use alone IM 308-C without CPU fritz, if I understand your suggestion correctly, I can use the IM306 DP Slave module alone without any other intellectual modules in my EG 183U and with IM 308-C master in ZG 135U and CPU 928B (not S7 master as M306 slave is positioning for). In this case can I configure it in the COM PROFIBUS software for IM 308-C as a slave? If yes, then it will be a solution for my issue, I hope. Is the following configuration correct: (ZG 135U with CPU 928B and IM 308-C as master) <----profibus------> (EG 183U with IM306 306-1UE00 as slave, S5 DI modules, S5 DO modules) ?????? You'll obviously need the GSD file for the IM306 DP Slave (download it from HERE)and configure the DP Slave in COM Profibus, but that's essentially it. I hope this helps
