Hi all,

We are working on a new boiler project for the German electrical energy industry. They demand a fail safe PLC with a 2 out of 3 instrument philosofy, our signals come in through a RIO using a safe communication line. The PLCs communicate with a top system by a fail safe communication line.

I am new to both the 400 series, and also to safety/fail safe programs. We have been trying to contact support at Siemens Norway, but they seem to have little experience to.

I got a couple of things:

1. We need help making a good topology, but we are unsure of what hardware we need. I was hoping our Siemens rep. could help us, but so far little luck. Are there any config tools specifically for my application? Any contacts at Siemens Germany who know the industry?

2. We need some coursing to understand the principle of the safety programming. Are there any courses that you guys would recommend?

Anything else anyone can think of that could help me, or that I should be aware of?

Hi all,

I will have more information on SIL classes and so on next week.

We are talking about a High Voltage boiler. We do have to comply to a safety chain as for a gass fired boiler, but it is slightly different. There is no actual flame, so (in theory) dry running won't result in catastrophic damage, other then the pumps.

We have made exact applications like these in Denmark and Norway on S7 300 PLC's, but the rules in Germany are different regarding redundancy, that is why we would be forced to use 400 series PLC's.

Wow, high voltage boiler. My boiler is a dual (gas and oil) boiler. I will use S7-412FH for the BMS with remote I/Os using ET200 red-bundles and S7-300 Failsafe modules.

Normally for oil and gas fired we use type approved BMS with external start and setpoint, separate relay based safety and S7 300 for control functions.
