Step 7 v5.5 or Tia Portal 13

John25 Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	Hi, I had a quick browse through the forum but didn't find the answer i was looking for so i thought i'd just make a thread and ask directly. From time to time, i'm doing a Siemens project, mainly for the 300-series (typically, 315 with profibus or profinet). Let's say that i do one project each year on average. So there isn't that much time to invest in research and experimentation. I'm now faced with the choice: continue using Step 7 v5.5 or move to Tia Portal V13. Since i'm not doing many Siemens projects, i'm not fully up to date with Tia Portal yet. I tried the previous versions (V12) and liked quite a few things about it but i also heard stories of slow software that used to crash a lot? Many of those problems may have been solved in V13 already. So my question is: if i do projects on an occasional basis, should i stick with v5.5 or should i go for Tia Portal V13? In general, i'm a strong believer that new software brings new opportunities so i was wondering if that applies to Tia too.

olloy Posts: 417 Rating: (37)	With Step 7 5.5 you can program S7-300/400 CPUs only. With TIA you will be able to program S7-300/400, 1200, 1500. Moreover, Siemens will continue to develop TIA and you will need to learn it and use it for many years. So, I suggest you to move to the TIA portal. BR, olloy

It still crashes, but it takes a lot more to crash it. Progress at least. It gets online faster. Many things it does not have that have been around since PLCs were invented. You cannot search a tag globally with the Find. You can work around that with the cross reference tool, but you cannot trace forward/backward through every instance of usage of that tag. You cannot search for every instance of a specific instruction type (like every place I use a T_SEND, which is very few places for most projects). Also useful for lots of odd issues, but you simply cannot trace. You need to make regular backups (even during the work-day) to prevent project corruption. An alternative using V13 is to have a PLC on your desk and download to it periodically. If your project is corrupted, you can upload from the PLC and restore anything that gets broken. There are many reports of projects that are properly prepared and absolutely written correctly simply will not compile. Create a new block, recreate the logic in the new block, delete the old block, and now it compiles and downloads just fine. That's a big deal that will drive you bonkers. My suggestion is to write your project in what you know, then migrate it using the portal migration tool (for testing). Download the portal project and see if it behaves exactly the same way as thelegacy step 7 project. If it does, you have 2 ways to create a project - just in case portal gets in your way.
