I am trying to reduce the working memory in my program. One place I see room for improvement is to create a new string data type that is say 20 bytes instead of 256 bytes. Is this possible?

 You can specify the length of data stored in STRING data type inside the brackets that is part of its syntax.For example while defining test1 variable as a STRING[20], 20 bytes of data in addition to 2 extra bytes are allocated to this variable.So, in TIA Portal you can define the intended length while declaring variables.Check the attached file.
