MM440 using a Load Side Safety Contactors instead of the line side

YvonV Posts: 29 Rating: (0)	Hello, I am looking at an application with a MM440 (6SE6 440-2UD31-8DA1) I've done this with other manufacturer of drives, but with this drive can I install the Safety contactors on the Load Side of the Drive (between Drive output and Motor)? Of course the contactors would be set on an off-delay after the enable and would not be instanatly openning. I've gone through the manual and they don't show any recommendations for this type of installation. Any direction would be great. Yvon

JensS Posts: 739 Rating: (55)	MM4 do not have any safety inputs! But it is possible to do it with Safety-Contactors, one in input one in output of the inverter. And be aware, it might be that the inverter been destroyed when using the Safety-Contactors -yes, an off-delay-contact can help.

Yvon When I asked a Siemens drives expert this same question for the MM replacement (G120), they suggested I get a safety integrated drive. We did and it was a good choice at the time for our specific application needs. I assume you will be coasting the motor by dropping the run command by dropping main control's 24v supply via safety relay and immediate safety contact opening. With a fraction of a second delay (longer if your application can safely handle it), you can drop the load side of the MM with a safety rated contactor and leave the drive powered up. If it were me, I would use an aux contact on the load side contactor to also drop out the run command. This would keep the drive from running without the load electrically connected. Dropping out the line side in some applications can create more problems than it solves. Dropping out both is certainly an option for some applications but for me, it might make more sense to get a safety integrated drive system. If you already have the MM and it works well for your needs, you can try the load side (with the delay) and if it works and meets the safety needs, that's great. If you are looking for safety redundancy, you might want to use TWO load side contactors in series.

YvonV Posts: 29 Rating: (0)	I am aware that MM drives don't have any safety inputs. and unfortunately I am working with an existing application where the integrator put a set of redundant contactors on the line side of the drive. When-ever the operator trips the area ligh curtain (every cycle) he must wait 10-20 seconds before resetting because if he does so too quickly the drive goes in to a fault. I would like to move them to the load side, but preferably would like a tech note or an example from Siemens on the application for a peice of mind really. I've done this numerous times with Allen-Bradley, AC Tech, Eurotherm drives so I'm not worried about the execution. but just some piece of documentation that supports this configuration from siemens to add to my application notes directory would be benificial for myself as well as my colleages.
