Modifying Tag 'Start' Values

Is there a way to modify a Tag's 'Start' value via script? I need a way of retaining values in WinCC across a shutdown / restart situation. Storing the values in the PLC would be problematic, as a chunk of the tags I need to preserve are text. Thanks in advance.
