I am a beginner who just started to learn about Siemens PLC from scratch. I have the following sets for my studies.

While I was reading the manuals about these hardware to get some basic concept about PLC , I got curious about the meaning of order number. I am guessing that S7 from 6ES7 means step 7 but I have no idea about the rest. Could you guys tell me what these numbers mean?

The meaning of part numbers was published from few years and then Siemens decided to remove this info. It's an internal info and I believe that Siemens doesn't like to share it in public.

When it comes to PLC here is a short guideline, but not bulletproof:

6ES7 = S7

6ES72 = 200 OR 1200 SERIES, 3 = 300 SERIES, 4 = 400 SERIES, 5 = 1500 SERIES

6ES750 POWERSUPPLY

6ES751, CPU ie. 6ES7511-1AK00-0AB0 = CPU 1511, you can also read number of network -1 means one port, 6ES7516-3AN01-0AB0, CPU 1516 with 3 networks

6ES752, DIGITAL MODULES 

6ES753, ANALOG MODULES 

6ES754, COMMUNICATION

For input and output:

6ES7521, Input,  ie 6ES7521-1FH00-0AA0 = Digital input for 1500 series

6ES7522, output

6ES7523, Combination input and output
