Recently I modified three things on an old Field PG M4, which just received from a previous colleague.

1. CPU upgrade from Celeron 1020E to I7 3630QM

2. upgrade to Intel 535 SSD 240G

3. updated to the lastest BIOS V180106

then the problem comes, that if I didn`t plug in the external DC power connection to the PG, when start the PG, it says it can`t find any bootable device.

However, it will come back normal immediately once I plug in the DC connection, then by shutdown and re-power up the PG again...

I speculate it might be a problem with the power state of the motherboard during the absence of external DC power???

Indeed, the previous Celeron 1020E TDP is 35W, the latter i7 TDP is 45W,

I am not professional on specs things, but since the two CPUs share the same motherboard socket, I guess the voltage demand definition will be the same? So It feels unlikely that the CPU will drag more power even when starting, and causing the failure of SSD. Still, I am guessing, please correct me if I am wrong.

But when PG in normal running, the i7 power consumption and heat is higher than the Celeron one, which is then reasonable.

If you have a chance, just replace the old processor for a test?

Also you may load the old BIOS again for test.

Also you may test SSD in other PC.... (??)

Sorry for this misty ideas, but your problem is strange...

You have change 3 things at the same time, so usually one of this three things cause the Problem...

The problem is for sure regarding lack of power. And the problem may not be only in the CPU consumption. Your new SSD can consume more power than your old HDD, it happened to me in some desktop upgrades.

Try your old HDD with the new CPU. Or try to compare the power consumption of both drives.
