i think i have foung a solution for the S5 with usb dilema.

I had the same problem as well and i made some changes in the parameters and comp port settings and i managed to go online with the PLC through USB.

I have attached the steps on hw to do it.

Hope it will help solve the S5 with USB dilema..

To use a usb to serial converter do the following:

Go to the website process-informatik.de and download the file
"Zusatztrieber fur Step5 fur PG-USB/S5-LAN V1.22"
(Go to downloads and then under the MPI/PPI/HMI/Ts-Kabel table, should be S5vir122.exe after you click on the download).

When you run that program select English, then usb->serial from the options, which com port you want it to use within step 5 and continue the install.

From then on whenever you wish to use the usb serial converter just make sure the correct com port is selected from within S5 (the one you selected during install) and that the USB-serial com port is the same in windows device manager.

There is a small bug that causes a blue screen every now and then when you are monitoring variables online for a long period of time (5 minutes), otherwise i never have any connection problems. We have it running on 3 different PC's all with PCMCIA-Serial converters and have tried successfully with a USB-Serial converter. Of course your serial cables need to be the normal TTY converter ones that you would usually use with your old computers
