Another option is to use a lot of slave I-Device s7-1200's as slave I/O connected to the master S7-1200 PLC.  In this way, you can connect a good bit of low cost I/O, and get smart I/O should you choose to organize the system around the i-Device PLCs appropriately.

 I usually add a Compact Switch Module if I'm using an S71200.  They are not expensive and give me more ports for connecting PG, I/O, HMI, etc.  I wish the 1214 had 2 ports instead of 1.

There is not mention of S7 1200 and that it is compatible with it, it is only mentioning 1500

The last thing I want to ask is :

how many profinet ports I need from the CPU side (S71200) to use for this ET200MP connection? 1 or 2? if 2, I can use an profinet communication processor or communication card? see attached from TIA selection tool, there seems to be no profinet card.

On a S7-1200 PLC the Max. No. of IO-devices is 16, just to make it clear
