Derive IP address from MAC address

What if I dont have MPI cable & Profibus cable ; What if I dont know IP address of CPU315 or CP341 card ; As an example (its just an imagination) ; Mac Address of my card is : 00 A4 45 10 11 12 for the first "6" character it's equal to 88 (for S7 300 comm cards) by converting other 2 characters : hexadecimal to decimal 10 = 16 11 = 17 12 = 18 By combining all we get the IP address 88.16.17.18 Is there any general way to get IP address ? So I´m afraidthere´s no way to CALCULATE an ip adress from mac adress or reverse! Every Ethernet device should have a worldwide unique MAC Adress. You´re able to assign any IP Adress to an ethernet device. But you should use Private IP Adresses from the Pool of Private Class A (10.0.0.0\|8) or Private Class C IP Adresses (192.168.0.0\|24) The service you need is called ARP (Adress Resolution Protocol) or actual RARP (Reverse Adress Resolution Protocol) These are services for converting MAC Adresses to IP Adresses RARP and IP Adresses to MAC Adresses ARP in an subnet. Try it with a Windows XP System with Internet connection Start->excecute->cmd.exe arp -a You see - thatsmore complex, you need to know mor about IP Adresses and IP subnetting. Buti can imagine what you want - handle a CPU although you don´t have infos or S7-Project! So you could use Step 7 Function target-system - edit ethernet device. I think that should work, when you connect to the subnet with any ip-adress. Step 7 tries to connect to the PLC using ISO protocol, and displays infos of your CP343-1.. Thats possible without TCP/IP service. Or try to use an ethernet sniffer like wireshark. But use a Hub Device (not a switch) for sniffing, you then are able to see both - MAC Adress and IP Adress. (With a switch you would only see Broadcasts or communication between CPU and your Sniffing PC) Furtheryou will need any communication initiated from or to CPU, so that there´s traffic that you can sniff. What about the first time of the card and CPU ? non-configured device. But all your answers like arp & wireshark are acceptable. Best regards.

Ates Posts: 198 Rating: (19)	I always load cpu first time like this (if i ve got cp 343-1 or 443-1), 1. set pg pc interface to relevant ethernet card, 2. set it to iso ind ethernet 3. now if cabling ok you should see cpu from accessible nodes and also download something to you can use iso protocol to communicate cpu at first time. you need to enter rigth rack/slot number as always

All components understanding DCP will answer when the PC scans a LAn with this tool (Simatic PN-CPUs, Simatic Net CPs, Scalance devices, ...) In Step 7 yo can also use the menu PLC ==> Edit Ethernet Node ==> Browse. You will hav a list of discoverd devices. In Step 7 you could also use "accessible nodes" to detect PN-CPUs or CPs.
