There is no hardware switch on the PLC as with older generation PLCs. It is now software driven. Several softwares can control the (software) switch, also included some HMI panels and web server (when actiavted).

I also miss the hardware switch but did have a reason to need a hardware switch as the TIA software controls RUN / STOP as it should.


The S7-1200 is connected with a normal ethernet cable to your PC ethernet cable.
No special hardware is needed.

The software that runs on your PC (TIA V13 in your case) should ensure that the Profinet protocol is used. Think of this as a language and ethernet is the telephone line.

What is important is what the PLC IP address is set to. Your PC should have a compatable setting for the IP address.

Ask if you need more detail on this point (IP addressing).

Online monitoring is possible. You can monitor through TIA in these ways..
(a) table of variables
(b) program monitoring
(c) datablock monitoring
(d) instruction specific monitoring (PID, motion control,..)
(e) graphs (TIA V13)

It is also possible to have several mixed instances of the above methods. But for each of the functions you need to have an established communication link and activate the online view of the function.

If you have the web server active, then a variation of (a) is available.

When I started out working with the S7-1200, I have spent a lot of time on the web in research. I have found that video tutorials have been the most help to me. I would suggest you look into this possibility to give you a kick start in using this PLC. Alternatively get someone to tutor you.
