I have a couple of IOT2040's setup. One running image 2.4 and one running image 2.6.

The One running 2.4  is happy taking data via the usb port from a lora gateway, using the standard serial input, using /dev/ttyUSB0. I have had node red stop a few times, and thought htis would be worth investigating. 

In my search for the above solution I came across image 2.6, which you would think would be more stable, but I have issues with the Serial input. I have removed the modbus nodes and and any other nodes that I would not use. When using the Serial Input node, which is now under networks as opposed to inputs on v2.4 image, node red crashes the second I deploy it.

I have tried several things here to try and track this down, including starting node-red manually rather than autostart, but nothing shows as to what maybe causing this. 

Is there a file log I can look at ? I have searched the forrum and tried the recompile mentioned in some posts, with no solution found so far.

There is /var/log/node-red.log which reports what node-red writes to the console. But that might be little when nodejs actually crashes.

Can you describe the detailed minimal steps to reproduce your problem on a fresh 2.6 image?

No other flows, tested with inject and debug node on thier own. Works ok.

Remove above so you just add a seial input node from under networks - basic settings. Deploy, and page shows disconnected as node-red has crashed. Reboot IOT to restart, after deleting flow file.

Nothing in the log as can be seen below.

I assume you applied the workaround from https://support.industry.siemens.com/tf/ww/en/posts/node-red-node-install-uninstall-problem/230252/?page=0&pageSize=10 before uninstalling he nodes, right? Then please share your flow (json file) so that we can see how it is configured - and try to reproduce the issue.

Yes I had those fixes in place, and the other  nodes did uninstall without issue.

I have attached below the test flow that crashes node-red.

I have used S2 in this example but I really want to use the USB port on the bottom of the device, like I have working on image 2.4. When doing a search for available ports the USB port does not show.

Have tried again using GS0 details. Node still crashes node-red when deployed.

You flow seems incomplete, node-red says: "Existing flow file is not valid json"

Please also list exactly which flows you first removed. Deploying the above without any removal works fine.

I have imported and tried that flow you posted, and node-red still crashes. Can you supply me the image you used. I will start again and then try your flow.

Sorry, missed the reply: I used the original example image 2.6.0, without any changes except the mentioned node-installation workaround.

I suspect that your image somehow got a serial node installed that was not built from sources but consists of a pre-built binary for standard i586, rather than the Quark processor. That caused crashes in the past. Normally, the serial node gets rebuilt during installation and even updates. You can trigger that manually by running "npm rebuild --build-from-source node-red-node-serialport" in /home/root/.node-red/node_modules.
