Hi, if I want to connect both an encoder and HMI to an S7-1200 cpu, do I need a cpu with 2 ethernet ports or can I use a cpu with a single port and a switch?

Hi,

It always better to use Ethernet switch even though your S7 1200 has two ports.

You can connect Encoder,HMI to PLC through Ethernet switch.

At the time of commissioning/diagnostics activity you can connect your PG  S7 1200 via Ethernet switch.

Proper diagnostics with connecting to your PG/PC will not happen if all two ports are occupied with HMI and encoder without using Ethernet switch.
