Is it necessary to use plc in each area to communicate between diffirent areas along wide distances(Kilo Meters)

EULER1313 Posts: 86 Rating: (1)	Hi All, 5areas are needed to be monitored... distance between each area and the other is 3 Km... Each area has a process whose temperature and pressure are measured by transmitters and a limit switch for a valve..... I want to collect those data to the control center through tcp/ip.... i suggested to use 5 PLCs, one PLC for each area every PLC has a Communication Processor which send its data to the control center.... Are there any solutions to use one plc or to reduce the cost?

Optical cables, modems (radio or whatever) etc. "Casual" Ethernet has a limitation on use, and 3km is far beyound this limit. Also Profibus can be choosed (with optical cable and OLM for example), then ET stations can be used (you need only 1 PLC). Can take a look on profinet also. Actually there are plenty of variants and you have to choose between them by yourself, taking into considiration what equipment/materials are avaible on site. If your system is smalli would think on smaller solutions - PLC for 10-20 signals is too expensivei supose.

If you have clear sight of visibility use radio modems or WiFi. This is the most cheap sollution. I would use S7-200 family controller in every station and maybe S7-300 in central station. I don't really know the structure of the system. There are also available ethernetradio modems. Radio modem is a little bit better if there is no very clear sight of view. WiFi works with very high frequency and sight of view must be ultra clear for long distances. 3 km is not very long distance. If you consider using radio try look at the ElPro manufacturer. We use it and have no problems.
