tomearp Posts: 51 Rating: (3)	hello. i'm a complete newbie with profinet and i need to exchange data between 2 IM151-8 CPUs. is it similar to profibus comms where i can get it to send/receive x number of bytes or words over and over?(like in HWConfig, double click the DP/MPI interface, configuration tab....see picture). any help much appreciated as i'm thoroughly confused! There is no device functionality. But there are still some great solutions. 1. S7 Connection between the 2 Devices. Programmed in NetPro. 2. Open TCP Connection. Programmed in your user programm (T_CONN, T_DISCON, T_SEND, T_RECV). 3. PN/PN Coupler. Programmed in the HW-Configuration, Real Time communication is possible.

tomearp Posts: 51 Rating: (3)	are there any PN CPUs that are capable of data exchange in the same way as DP? i'm obviously missing the point of profinet. i want to use it to make use of the existing network infrastructure on a site. but by the sounds of it i'm going to end up putting extra hardware in tolink the CPUs together, ori move away from profinet, change to DP devices, and end up running DP cables between the various controller locations.

Do you really need the Realtime data transmission? Otherwise I would advice the first 2 options. Since the module is very new I think the features of te device wil be expanded in the future. So far there is no CPU from Siemens with Device functionality integrated.

Just you can communicate across the boundaries from a network (different IP Range). Create your stations, if possible in the same project because you can use specified connections. When the HW-Config is ready you jump to NetPro and configure from one of the device the S7 Connection o the partner. If this is done you create the blcoks you need to SEND and RECEIVE the data. For example PU/GET or SEND/RECEIVE: It's not very difficult to program. You could use the examples for S7-300 Devices on the Support Site.
