Why are we able to install wincc unified and wincc Professional on the same PC, but we are able to do this with wincc unified and wincc advanced?

The reason is the conflict of the SQL, which is installed by WINCC professional or Unified because they are SCADA systems.

Two different versions/instances of SQL cannot be installed on the same system. WIN CC advanced as it is HMI concept does not have this problem.

While this is understandable, it poses a problem for developers who have to maintain multiple systems with different versions.

Siemens should really improve the development experience in this regard.

For example, I have to maintain a system in TIA V15, I have a SCADA in WinCC V16 Professional, a colleague is using WinCC Unified V17 and I am starting a project with V18. It is impossible to work on such a bloated system with so many VMs and different versions, it is impossible to maintain environment parity and it is frustrating for the developers who have to manage so many VMs.

That is why in our company we are avoiding Unified Systems at the moment... but that can't be done forever... 

Would have been nice that this issue would have been crearly metionend at least, but I guess marketing department wouldn't be happy.

As of v19 you can have parallel installations of unified and wincc prof +advanced.
