Hi everybody, 

I am looking for a solution to measure the dimensions of rectangular plastic cube parts that have different dimensions and move on a conveyor belt to reach the cutting point. I want to measure the width and height of the object using a sensor. Then, based on the volumetric mass of the object, according to the calculation I wrote in the program for the PLC, I want to calculate how much of the plastic package's length should pass under the blade to cut the pieces, considering the weight of, for example, 10 lb or any weight that the operator enters from the HMI. I would appreciate it if someone could give me an idea and a solution for measuring this type of part and suggest a suitable sensor for it.

I would not use an ultrasonic senor but you have a rubber. In my opinion is the better way a optical sensor with triangulation or a thrubeam-sensor.

Are your products very different or have they nearly the same dimension?
Do you have differences for a few mm or a few centimeter or more?

The suggested sensors are very depending of your material differences between the different products.

Please let us know more about the dimensions of the product.
I will see that you become a qualified suggestion with a recommendation for sensors.

I would use Laser distance feed back.  They make scales that work as a conveyor section. I've used them to check small plastic bags to confirm 5 weed eater blades where in each bag.  Looks to me like you are "halving" the product.  If that is the case I would also want position feed back on conveyor 1 and scale after the cutter, not 2 lasers.  Then you would have enough information feed back to adjust the cutting position as process variations are introduced.

Between conveyors 1 & 2 I would have a  Ball Transfer Roller. So the friction doesn't twist the product, while getting into position.
