assuming that you are using the Example Image, it is possible to update the versions of NodeJS and NodeRED:

npm install -g npm@14.0

npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red

However, please keep in mind that the newer versions may be incompatible with the mraa library adapted for the IOT2050 respectively the NodeRED modules for it.
