Currently, we are overhauling a vertical spinner for spinning wheel discs from a 1/2" steel blank (21.85" diameter). Our machine is like a lathe, but it doesn't cuts metal, but it folds it instead. It consists basically of a spindle and two tools (rolls). Each of the rollers travels along two axes: 1st roll (Rough roll): X: vertical axis Y: horizontal axis 2nd roll (Finish roll): U: vertical axis W: horizontal axis Each roll has to travel along different paths, formed by both lines and arcs. The cycle starts by one of the two rollers (the Rough roll) going to the starting point of the path, and then traveling along it. The second roller (finish roll) always goes a definite distance D behind the "rough roll" in the vertical axis. Is very important in our application that this distance D is constantly maintained along the whole cycle. The paths of the two rollers are different from each other. The "master" is the Finish roll. It means that the Rough roll always goes "before" (lower in the vertical axis), but the movements are controlled by the Finish roll. So, if the vertical axes X and U are let to be positive downwards: Vertical U=X+D ; X: independent; U: dependent Horizontal Y=f(X) W=f(U) I'm sending you attached a drawing with the schematics of the two paths. We had chosen a CNC, but it's deffective: it doesn't interpolate arcs, and it doesn't let us set one the axes to be a slave of other. We think that this is called "electric cam/gear" function. Currently, we have a Siemens S7-200 PLC that governs the other movements of the machine (feeders, magnets, gates, etc.) The rollers are moved by means of hydraulically-assisted digital cylinders, but driven by analogic drivers (+-10V), which, in turn, govern stepper motors. For the feedback, we use linear digital encoders (Accurite) that read the exact position of the rollers. Their features are: +5V, A, B, Z, y, /A, /B, /Z, TTL. Resolution: 100 pulses/mm We also have a PC mounted on the control console. We were told that the correct system was a Sinumerik 840D, but as it's highly customizable, we would appreciate if you could help us in choosing the right configuration.
