Assign it something from within the block with the temp tag declaration.

Let's say your temp variant is called tVariant (datatype Variant).

#tVariant := #someOtherTagWithCompatibleType;

Do you want to pass a pointer / any / variant into the block and use it somehow internally, and maybe pass a pointer / any back out of the same block, passing through tVariant along the way maybe?

I see you mention L-value.  That to me means you are using s7-300/400.  I cannot help you with portal and variants on that platform.  I would be telling you lies because I have no idea.
