Is it necessary to address the plc directly in tia portal?

question... do you need to address the plc directly in tia portal? if i scan the network it always throws an error but if i connect to the plc directly it works.. i am working on v17 though. communication seems fine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
