Well, actually the CMR is a really powerful unit.

You just need to understand it, or more accurately, the logic of the persons who designed it.

The CMR can get accessed via the RJ45 connector, while being connected to GSM network, so it is not either / or. It's both

Yes, you can address BM values.

My local rep told me two years ago that i was not possible, but it was. Siemens staff still regards LOGO as a 'toy', and I do not agree.

It is NOT a 'smart relay'.... it is a compact PLC, especially since they added HTML front end to BM.

If there is a BM connected, you can:

• Connect to that BM via DynDNS or Open VPN etc to load program
• Connect to that BM to view web page (your answer)
  
• SMS values to and from virtually any block in ONE BM. - Alternative to looking at web page?
  
• trigger emails and /or SMS for events/limits etc
• trigger BM or CMR outputs directly
• If you bring values from other BM's into a single BM... then read from that unit
  
  

The GSM connectivity was there for the SMS functions, and the email function was added only 18-24 months ago!! (go look in an old version of the manual- no email setup )

It was designed before the IoT explosion...

Because now you can use Node-Red to talk Modbus TCP to:

• Siemens IoT 2000 sheild with Ardinio ( CE Rating)
• Phoenix Contact Sheild with Raspberry Pi
• Raspberry Pi
• etc etc
  

  Then use Emails and Twitter and other media to interact and move data etc.

The CMR still has its place as a plug and play unit for SMS and emails, if you do not want to fiddle with IoT development.

I agree with what you said, and we're 5 years down the line here, but I'm struggling with getting it to work, 1st didn't realise we were going to need a BM, thought the I/O in the unit would be reachable via Modbus, but it isn't.

I'm trying to get emails working using the local email server on the site LAN, but it looks like this can only be done through the Phone connection, is this the case?

I tried using the local time server but that can only come though the phone network too!
