I have a s1200 PLC firmware 4.2.1, and the code on it is in v13.

am I correct in saying that if I want to update the version to v15 tia, that I will open the v13 code in v15, itll do the update/upgrade of the code and then I simply download that code onto the plc again?

my concerns are,

• will this work?
• is there another or better way?
• and are there any things to watch out for with the updating and downloading? (will the program function like it used to)

Im currently working at a big factory and they have many siemens PLCs and every second one needs a different TIA version to upload the code and make any changes as they dont have back ups for many of the stations, my plan is to get most if not all of them on the same version of TIA, to make it much better to do work there and fault find in the future.

Hi

To upgrade your V13 projekt, you need your project to be TIA V13 SP1 or later.
See FAQ 109476392

When you then open the project in V15 it will uprade the project automatically.
Any hardware in the project will not be changed to a newer version, so the cpu will stay in the firmware version and also any HMI will stay in the image version it was.
You have to manually change the version if you want to change it.
For the cpu it means that you need to make sure it actually has the correct firmware or newer.

Also, I would recommend you to always have the actual project for all cpus instead of uploading whatever program happens to be in the cpu.
One issue is that you need the exact same version of TIA portal to upload that was used to download.
Another is that if the project that was originally created, is using gsd files then they will be included in the project backup.
This was done since V15 I think. I don't remember exactly.
If you upload a project from a cpu and do not have the gsd file then it will not know how to work with the hw configuration.
