How to remote boot a Server/Computer via S7-200 and CP243-IT

Sergio Paganoni Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi, I've the following solution: An S7-200 controller with the CP243-IT module, now what I have to boot a couple of server (specifically a Windows Server 2008 and a Windows XP embedded) from my S7-200 (once he detect a failure on the computer)... The only way I know to boot a PC remotely is via Wake-On-LAN packets, but I cant generate them with my PLC/CP243-IT... Another way would be to bypass the normal start-button of both PCs with a relay on the PLC but doesnt seems a good solution to me... There is any other way? (maybe it exists some kind of PCI peripheral to add to PCs who boot the PC once it receive a 24V signal from my PLC => Am I just dreaming?!) Thanks for the help Sergio

Sergio Paganoni Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi Tom, Thanks for the reply, thats a reason, the server could stop (crash) and especially the other embedded PC so I've to be able to reboot boot from my PLC (it's an installation above 1500mt, unreachable during winter.

tomearp Posts: 51 Rating: (3)	if the motherboards in the PCs are fairly modern then you might find an option in the BIOS called something like "Restore After Power Loss" or "Restore on AC" or something similar. As the description suggests when the mains is switched on it will boot automatically. if you've got that option then you can break into the mains supply feeding the PC and switch the live conductor through one of the PLC outputs (or through an interposing relay if the PLC outputs aren't sufficiently rated for the current). if the motherboards don't offer that option..... if the power supply in the PC is ATX then you can wire the PLC output in parallel with the 'on/off' switch. on ATX power supplies the 'on/off' switch just sends a signal to the power supply, rather than directly switching the power. to switch on simply toggle the output on and off again (bear in mind the PLC can probably switch faster than the power supply can react, so you'll probably want a delay to keep the output on for 300ms or something similar) to switch off again.... if you have remote access once the PC is booted then just shutdown through the operating system. if not, you can assign a behaviour to the power switch (see Power Options in Control Panel), so you could toggle the output in the same way as for switching on and Windows would carry out a shutdown automatically. failing that; on ATX power supplies if you switched the output on and kept it on for at least 5 seconds then that would just switch the PC off. obviously not the ideal solution to shutting down as it doesn't give the OS chance to do it's bit and pieces before the power goes off. hope this helps!
