Elbendary Posts: 8 Rating: (0)	Dear All AsI know that S7-200 acts only as a slave in the Profibus DP or MPI ,but I do have a customer needs to connect Existing S7-224 CPU using EM 277 Profibus DPmodule to other remote area 250 m away. the remote area will be occubied with 8DI , 8 DO & 4 AI What can i suggest him away from putting another CPU in the remote area and use CPU~CPU Communication, AS-Interface may be a solution , i donot know so please help if possible Thnaks

dchartier Grandmaster Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 9/16/2025 Posts: 12409 Rating: (2717)	Hello Elbendary; The S7-200 is not easily transformed into a master for remote I/O, even As-i in your case would be a problem beacause of the distance you mention (you would need a repeater over 100m). You have to consider the cost of the whole system. Adding As-i interface electronics to all your I/O, on top of the As-i master in the S7-200 and the required repeater. not including the As-i addressing interface,would cost a lot more than simply purchasing a CPU 224 and a EM 231, which would be connected directly to your (now) local I/O. Then you could follow Tip 27 from the S7-200 tips and Tricks and connect the CPUs in a remote I/O network with little problem: https://www.sea.siemens.com/us/Products/Automation/Micro-Automation/support/Tips_and_Tricks/S7-200/Pages/S7-200-Tip-27.aspx Just my $0.02. Elbendary Posts: 8 Rating: (0)	Thanks for your reply , i am sure this will be the best solution on the other hand i was still trying to find a solution then i read about the communication module EM 241 modem, it has the following modes: 4 operating modes using different integrated communication protocols: Teleservice (Mode 1): incl. program modification, status, etc., via STEP 7-Micro/WIN; configuration is not necessary. Modbus master/slave (Mode2) Text messages/pager messages (Mode3) CPU-to-CPU communication, MODBUS or PPI (Mode4) i can see the mode No.2 is a Modbus Master /Slave , so i thought if i can use CPU 224 as a master modbus and connect to the remote area which will be a slave modbus but again I cannot find any IM for our ET200 series uses Modbus salve , is it true Actually i am sure the your solution will be the best , but i am just trying to get more knowledge about our products profile Thank you again

It will work of course, but you still have to have a recieving end, whether another CPU 224 + EM 241, or a Modbus slave Remote I/O system from another manufacturer (look them up on the web) with a recieving modem. If you look at darius' suggestion, which is excellent, you will have to use a Ethernet processor on the CPU 224. with switches for LAN or iWAN, and a compatible system on the other end. Just decide what the client`s priorities are, the S7-200 is flexible enough to adapt; just calculate the overall cost and development time first. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
