TIA 11 program upload from device with TIA 12?

Andreas73 Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	If I try to upload a program from a S7-1200, I will get the error message that the CPU is incompatible with the project. There is a S7-1200 CPU1241C programed with TIA 11. I need to upload the program and save it on my laptop. My istalled TIA is V12. Therefore I get the error message. I need to copy this program to an additional S7-1200 CPU1214C at a different location. I created a new project with the same hardware configuration, was able to change the ip address but still unable to save this program. Is there a way to load and 'convert' it into V12? How do you do a program upload in STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V12 when the device has been configured withSTEP 7 V11? Hope this helps.

I tried to download it to the existing CPU and overwrite the program. I got none error. But if I load it again out of the CPU, I will get the same information that it is a V11 project. For some reason obviously I cannot overwrite the existing V11 program with the saved "new" V12 program. Maybe you have an idea or explanation. I just want to make sure that later in the field other technicians not run in the same issue. Thanks, Andreas73

0_Einstein Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 1/16/2026 Posts: 16379 Rating: (2522)	To update a V11 loaded PLC, you will need to do some basic steps. 1. Reset PLC to factory defaults. This will change the hardware configuration to default settings. The upload from V11 to V12 will not capture the hardware settings, so any settings like use clock and system memory bytes will need to be configured. 2. Convert the V11 to V12 program (which you already did). 3. Download to PLC and start. The reset to factory defaults is the key point.

I just want to make sure that later in the field other technicians not run in the same issue. Thanks, Andreas73 Hello Andreas73, TIA Portal v12 offers two modes of project for working with S7-1200. One is the compatibility mode and other is v12 mode. In compatibility mode, you can work (open / edit / download to device) with a project which was created with STEP 7 v11. The highligh here is the compatibility mode project (of v12) can be opened again in a STEP 7 v11 installation. In v12 mode your v11 project gets upgraded to v12 project. Hereafter it can't be opened again with STEP 7 v11 or compatibiity mode. If you wish not to use the latest functionality of STEP 7 v12 for your existing hardware, then you can continue with compatibility mode. Ideally the new hardware and new features of S7-1200 will call for STEP 7 v12 as prerequisite. The call is yours.
