since there won't be a 100% replacement possibility, maybe it'd be easier to name the relavant circumstances of the application (e.g. interface, object type, object size, distance), to find out if a replacement is possible?

Not even the Cognex mentioned in the PDF you added, can do what you are asking. Look at the title of the document: "DATAMAN 150/260 SERIES BARCODE READERS"

What do you need?..
a) Character recognition:

Every box is unique;
The text printed on the box should be recognised;
The text is communicated back to the master (PC / PLC / ..);

b) Complex pattern recognition:

Every box in a batch is the same;
The vision system should recognise that the text on the box
  is the same as the one before;
The master is "told" that the box is the same vs not the same;

c) Simple pattern recognition:

Recognise that there is printing on the box;
The master is "told" that the box has printing vs not printed;

With this knowledge you should talk to an agent near you to discuss the detail. This kind of application is best handled when talking person to person.

The Existing Cognex DM262X is working fine on these printed text on every case with master PLC Allen Bradley over Ethernet IP..

Now a new conveyor line will be installed on SIEMENS automation system.
