Actually, I want to detect scrap bucket car number when it reaches near furnace at the time of charging in steel melting furnace. I have found some siemens RFID but the detecting range is up to 4 meter. I need more more than 10 meter. Can you please suggest me a long distance RFID system so that i can detect the scrap bucket car -STC numbers. I want to take the car number into S7-400 PLC .. Regards Mahmud

If you need to reach the tag 100% of the time and always need to be able to write data to it e.g., then you're right and you're stuck with 5m). Alternatively you could also take a look at SIMATIC RTLS

And in general the detection range of an RFID system depends mainly on the characteristics of the transponders (tags), the reader, the antenna and the environmental conditions. For example, if you use an RF680R reader with an RF660A antenna, with RF620T tags, in a favorable environment you could achieve a detection range of about 8 m. But depending on the economic conditions of your project, you could increase that distance by using tags with larger antennas, but that will require tuning tests, to avoid errors in the total purchase of the tags.
