However, in principle, it is not necessary, once the donwload is consistent and CPU goes to stop. About to "compress" memory to place large programs, I suggest, if possible, to reorgineze the program with more use of FC and FB.

Regards Contrary to popular opinion, just throwing in a bunch of FCs/FBs is not necessarily the best answer.Because of the overhead for an FB/FC, adding too many calls can actually INCREASE working memory usage, depending on how your FB/FC areconstructed. You will need to use the program info (V11) or program resources usage to see which OBs/etc. are your big memory users. Once you find your memory consumers, dig into them to find out what portions are common to other parts of your code, try making a generic FB/FC, and evaluate whether it improves your working memory usage. If it gets worse instead of better, consider not using internal temp variables. For a case where I could not squeeze all my application into available working memory, I did quite a few things... Created DBs for temporary (single instance) and persistent (multi-instance) storage. For example, I had a lot of interim calculations holding values that I really could use a temporary DB tag, like: temp_db.INT1 temp_db.INT2 temp_db.REAL1 temp_db.REAL2 temp_db.UINT1 temp_db.UINT2 ... Each time you find yourself creating a temporary tag inside an FB/FC, use a global DB instead. This reduced the memory footprint on each FB/FC. Finding better algorithms helped as well. Sometimes the code became more difficult to understand, but it did reduce memory consumption. You can also look at what happens when you add block/network comments and block descriptor comments. If your working memory is reduced, you can try abbreviations ... I do not recall this being a problem but you might. Restructure and use multiple OBs rather than simply just Main OB. With TIA Portal, you can have multiple OBs. It is quite nice to know your OBs will always run and do not need to be inside the main OB. You can group logical pieces of code that must run all the time, put that into an OB. Makes it easy to reuse your program logic :) For logic run on first scan, put all your first scan logic in the first-scan OB. This helped me as I was inadvertently duplicating first-scan code in several locations. Consolidating it made it easy to find duplication and reduce first-scan logic. If you do not need something to make your code work, take it out. I had tools that only helped at startup or during diagnostic testing in the plc logic. Did not help the user program, just me. I took that out and saved quite a bit of working memory. In the end, I squeezed what was 125% of working memory into 87% of working memory, and it also ran faster by an entire 1 ms. :)

I powered down, pulled the memory card, put it in a card reader, erased all of the folders and files (using Windows Explorer), put the card back in the CPU, powered up, then reloaded the project. It went from less than 1% free to more than 99% free. David

This application was set up to use log files, on the memory card, in order to record a two minute, high-speed, event occuring only once per hour. The file was to be deleted after a user downloaded the file via the built-in website. We will be abandoning this strategy. Even with the files all deleted, the work memory appeared to not be released. TIA software does not seem to have a "Compress" function. I have seen a "COMPRESS" function block for the S7-400, but I did not see this in the S7-1200. . . . . I am waiting to see what the contractor has as a "Plan B". On a further note: The web interface is slow, unreliable, and impractical when the CPU is on a segregated sub-net and it is running two servo drives via Profinet.

I Tested by making two FB and calling a SINA_SPEED FB 10 times. One with 10 Single instance and one with 10 Parameter instance. Single instance used 510Byte Parameter instance used 340Byte Tested multi instance just to see if there was any difference Multi instance used 341Byte Hope that helps anyone out there trying to reduce their work memory
