Hello, Thermal magnetic circuit breakers, which are the type found in mostdistribution boards, incorporate both techniques with the electromagnet responding instantaneously to large surges in current (short circuits) and the bimetallic strip responding to less extreme but longer-term over-current conditions. The thermal portion of the circuit breaker provides an "inverse time" response feature, which trips the circuit breaker sooner for larger overcurrents. Hope this helps

Well the basic principle is same i.e. Heating and bending of copper strip to provide protection. But in OLR the strip is having less impedence then that of MCBs and hence MCBs trips on higher currents i.e.3 to 5 times inB curve and 5 to 8 times in C curve and provides s/c protection.

Hence ar the time of SC or OL its giving a trip???? hi yes there are bimetallic strip are present in MCB as per its Rating which in turn trip the MCB in case of O/L and Short ckt (in both the case high current flow through the mcb) as a result bimetallic temp.rises and trip the MCB. regards aakash

Valli Posts: 262 Rating: (45)	Every current carrying conductor behaves like a magnet. Hence, Copper conductor inside MCB or OLR becomes magnet and hence a magnetic field gets created. Direction of current defines the orientation of magnetic feild. Thermal-magnetic circuit breakers combine the benefits of a thermal and magnetic circuit breaker: a delay that avoids nuisance tripping caused by normal inrush current, and fast response at high currents. High overcurrents cause the solenoid to trigger the release mechanism rapidly, while the thermal mechanism responds to prolonged low value overloads. They have a characteristic two-step trip profile that provides fast short-circuit protection of expensive electrical systems while minimizing the risk of disrupted system operation. Where reliable operation under adverse conditions is required, high performance circuit breakers provide high interrupting capacity and excellent environmental specifications. Typically these circuit breakers are specifically designed for aerospace, defense and similar heavy-duty applications where extreme vibration, mechanical shock, and other conditions are present, and where circuit breaker performance is absolutely critical. For high performance applications, thermal circuit breakers have a compensating element that eliminates sensitivity to ambient temperature.
